I find that the market is changing so fast there's not much point
recommending anything bought more than three or four months ago.
Just do a search via www.pricerunner.co.uk and find the highest
resolution for the money. Don't be too bothered about brightness, even
the lowest of the current generation are ample for most uses.
Look out for generous warranties - I bought an excellent Mitsubishi a
couple of years back that was good value and included a free 3yr
warranty. It also has a laser pointer incorporated into the remote
control, which is a nice touch.
I'd avoid Hitachi as one of ours blew up for no apparent reason, still
under warranty - just!
Sanyos are cheap, but I'm not convinced. We have a couple which behave a
little oddly at times, but that could be down to the control system.
Also, their filters are designed in a stupid way, dumping all the dust
inside the machine if changed while the projector is mounted from the
ceiling, which ours are permanently.
We also have a couple of recent Sonys which are nice units, though only
get light use.
