I've been trying to take photos of horse racing, jumping, etc. with maximum
zoom. when I use 1/1000th of a second I find that I've got to boost the ISO
to 200 or even 400 on days with bright sunshine. the aperture chosen by the
camera is around f4.2. this happens with spot as well as matrix metering,
low sharpening, and hue of -1.

a) this is because a longer lens needs a rather large opening, right?

b) do you other folks experience the same?

c) is there something I could do better?

d) this means that using Nikon's 1.5x telephoto extender would not suit my
needs at all, right?
