IIRC, someone posted either here or on dpreview, that whilst the sensors are
pretty much linear, there are some nonlinearities in their response. Thus
for things like new Canon 1DmkII which has IIRC 200-1600 ISO, with optional
100 and 3200, the engineers think the best results come in the middle band.
When going lower for example, the Dynamic range may be lower, as all the
electrons hitting the sensor, may fill the 'buckets' before more detail is
visible.
